This is a collaborative post

Have you ever noticed how some people’s homes look perfect inside, and everything seems to have a place? Yet, when you get back to your abode, all you see is chaos and clutter in virtually all rooms!

That doesn’t mean you are lazy and can’t be bothered to tidy up after yourself. But, what it probably says is you might need some help with working out what to do with things that don’t have a proper place in your home, which is presumably why you’re here today!

The following are some handy hints and tips to help you organise the stuff in your home:

1. Throw Away Anything You Don’t Need

One of the first things you should do is go through each room in your home and look at what you’d like to keep and what you don’t need anymore. There will be loads of things that you probably don’t even remember having!

Get a few bin bags and start filling them with the stuff you want to throw away or donate to charity. You’ll soon see an immediate improvement in each room, and there will be significantly fewer items you need to find a home for.

2. Don’t Get Distracted

It’s all too easy to stop what you’re doing because you get distracted by old photographs or mementoes that remind you of certain occasions in your life. There’s nothing wrong with reminiscing about the past, but that’s not your focus on the task at hand.

One way to avoid getting distracted is by forcing yourself to have a quick look at each item and then decide what you’re going to do with it. Otherwise, you could find yourself spending weeks and months going through your belongings instead of hours or days!

3. Invest in Better Storage

Once you’ve gone through everything, you’ll undoubtedly have some items that need to go somewhere. The question is, where can you put them? If your home is decidedly lacking in decent storage, it’s time to invest in some practical storage solutions.

For example, a tasteful mirrored chest of drawers in your bedroom can help you better organise your clothing instead of leaving items in a heaped pile somewhere. You can get horizontal or vertical chest of drawers to best suit the space in the room.

4. Give Back Anything You’ve Borrowed

Have some of your relatives or friends lent you items like DVDs, equipment, historical paperwork, or anything else for that matter? If so, now’s the time to return those items back to their rightful owners.

The last thing you want to do is accumulate other people’s stuff in your home, especially if you’ve done absolutely nothing with them! It might shock you to learn how many items you’ve got stored in your home that aren’t yours!

5. Don’t Feel Guilty for Getting Rid of Anything

Lastly, you should never feel guilty for removing any unwanted items from your home. It doesn’t matter who gave them to you or for what reason, if they aren’t useful to your home or your life, there’s no point keeping them.
