A lot of people get very worked up about politics. They can’t understand how the opposing side could be so stupid, ignorant, or downright evil. Eventually, the pain of politics can become so great that people either withdraw from it altogether or find themselves in a constant state of worry or rage.
Politics, however, ultimately comes down to public policy: what the government ultimately decides to do. It is, therefore, better to start from here than listen to politicians and pundits. They often make a lot of noise, but with minimal real-world impact on the ground.
The key to changing your attitude towards politics is to move away from the rhetoric and towards the facts. Ideally, you want to evaluate the policies of politicians, not their ramblings or buzzwords.
But how do you work out whether a particular policy is a good idea or not?
The process, as the following infographic makes clear, is actually surprisingly simple. All you need to do is make sure that they are adhering to principles of good governance.
If you’d like to see some good policies in action, take a look below. The infographic charts some excellent decisions made by politicians over the last couple of decades to reduce crime and improve health. You can also view a decision-making flow chart, which shows some of the steps that politicians should take to implement effective public policy. The graphic makes it easier for you to escape mainstream political commentary and delve down into the details.
