Lockdown is hard for everyone but especially for those who are self isolating alone
I thought I would put together a list of activities you can do from your own home to keep occupied and active. I personally have friends and family who are self isolating alone and these are all things they recommend.
It is important to keep in touch with family and friends and you can easily do that online
We are very lucky to live in a time where we have the internet at our fingertips and social media is the tip of the iceberg.
First up is Social Media
Obviously the likes of Facebook and Instagram have been a round for a long time now and we have our friend networks. My mum (who is well over 50 I can assure you) is an avid Facebook user. Not only has she made contact with friends from school and old work colleagues but she’s also found like minded people in the form of Facebook Groups.
Facebook Groups are a great way to make friends online. There are all sorts of groups from political, to hobby groups and local groups. I have a Facebook group for my local area of Sevenoaks to keep people updated of what’s going on in the area. I also have one that links with my Facebook page where like minded people can chat together.
If face to face is more your style House Party has become very popular. House Party can host more than two people at a time and there are great games to play. I know my kids love it and from an adults point of view it’s great fun after a couple of drinks!
Prior to lockdown would we have thought we would be having pub quizzes via video conferencing such as Zoom? Yet here we are. The highlight of someone’s week can be seeing a load of familiar faces – or not so familiar – for a virtual pub quiz or bingo.
I have single friends who are having a whale of a time on dating sites during lockdown. It is a great time to take advantage of the fact that you can’t physically meet so have to make the effort to get to know each other virtually. Online over 50s dating is a big thing. I mean, how many of us went to the pub even before lockdown? How many of us even had the time?
As you get to know each other over the next few months and weeks you can make plans to meet – maybe you can play games on House Party?!
Catching up with the must-see films and box sets
Now is a great time to catch up with all those shows you planned to watch but were too busy to. Even having two young children we are managing two episodes of a Netflix series a night. I have to admit that we have Sky, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Disney+ – don’t judge us, we don’t have anything else to live for at the moment.
Netflix have actually brought out a great app that allows you to watch programmes with friends but if you don’t have that you can always arrange a watch party via Facebook, that way you can enjoy them together!
So these are my ideas to stay sane while self isolating alone – what would you add?
