Tips to spend less time cleaning floors in a busy family home

This is a collaborative post

There are lots of cleaning advice articles online, specifically related to different types of flooring and how to get the best results for your home. That’s not what this is going to be about.

It this post I’m going to share some tips about how to help keep your floors clean and spend less time cleaning them. Cleaning the floors can be the last thing you want to do when you get some spare time, so hopefully, these tips will help you keep your floors clean so you can use your time to do something else.

Stop the dirt before it comes inside your home.

Depending on how you feel about people wearing their shoes inside your home, this may already be something you do, but getting people to take their shoes off when they come through the door is the easiest way to stop dirt being walked through your home. It’s very easy to unknowingly walk through the house with mud, or worse, on the bottom of your shoe. Having a designated area as soon as you enter your home, where people can take their shoes off will help keep your floors cleaner and prevent anything from the outside being walked into your home. This is particularly useful if you have carpet flooring as this can be much harder to clean if something is pressed into it.

Rubber plate and drink holders for kids

Accidents are going to happen when you have young children, we all accept this. Every parent is going to find themselves cleaning up spilt food or a drink at some point in their life. There are a few things you can do to help deal with this. Firstly, in rooms where spills are most likely to happen, for example, the kitchen or dining room, choose a water-resistant floor, which won’t stain, and the spill can be wiped up quickly. Vinyl flooring is an excellent choice for this.

Secondly, to help reduce spills and drops, you can get rubber placemats and non-slip cup holders. These are great for kids as they help keep plates or cups from slipping off tables and spilling their contents on the floor. The placemats are particularly useful when your children are starting to use cutlery where pushing and pulling their knife back and forth can often send plates sliding off a table onto the floor. By helping prevent the spill in the first place, you’re saving yourself the cleaning later.

Machine washable rugs

It’s quite common for people to put down rugs to help protect and keep their floors clean around the house. One issue with some rugs is they need to be cleaned like a carpet, which can require specialist machinery which is time-consuming. If you do want to add a rug to your home, look for one which is machine washable. This way, when it starts to get dirty or has something spilt on it, you can just put it in the washing machine rather than spending a lot of time trying to clean it yourself.

Artificial grass in your back garden

Playing in the garden is great for kids, but even when the weather is good, they can end up getting a bit dirty, which can be transferred to your floors when they come back inside. While this won’t be right for everyone, replacing your natural garden grass with artificial grass will stop your kids getting muddy and bringing that back into your home. Even when it has rained, and the ground is wet, they can play outside and not bring mud or dirt back inside.
