Why Are Study Breaks so Important for Children?

Study breaks are crucial for children because they help students to stay focused, remain motivated and achieve their goals. Students of all ages can benefit from taking regular breaks from studying and I have even teamed up with an independent school in Barnet to explain why.

Improves Productivity

Many children have fairly short attention spans and may start to lose interest when studying for a long period of time, especially if they are not inspired by the subject. With that said, breaks spaced out throughout homework, revision, or their day at school can help to improve their ability to concentrate.

Absorbing and understanding new information can often take time, so having a study break can give your child’s brain the opportunity it needs to process the knowledge. If you notice your child becoming stressed or irritated with their homework, perhaps you could suggest that they take a break and come back to it later.

Boosts Creativity

Taking regular breaks refreshes our minds and allows our thoughts to wander. Have you ever noticed your best ideas seem to come to you when you’re lying in bed or on a long car journey? Encouraging your child to take a break from school work will boost their creativity by allowing them to think beyond the words in their textbooks. 

Enhances Social Skills

Socialising with friends and family is a vital part of your child’s development. So while it might be a good thing that your child is showing a keen desire to learn, it’s also important that you encourage them to stop from time to time so that they can meet new people and socialise. It will be beneficial for them to have someone to talk to about any problems they might be having at school and be able to share their ideas and thoughts with others who can give them a new perspective.

Relax

A long day at school can be overwhelming for students, particularly when they are required to come home and continue with homework. Encourage your child to relax and unwind at home before beginning their homework, to help limit stress.
