Hyper Japan, as the name suggests, is a huge celebration of Japanese culture in London over a weekend in July
Under the roof of Olympia in London, over the weekend of 12th to 14th July 2019, you’ll find (among other things) Japanese cuisine, culture and, most importantly in this household, gaming.
2019 sees the tenth anniversary of Hyper Japan
And we are planning to attend as a family. Monsieur Incidental has visited before and is very excited to take us along.
Monsieur Incidental has been fascinated by Japanese culture for many years. He’s even learnt a bit of Japanese (and I still can’t speak his native language, French. Shame on me!).
What can you expect from Hyper Japan?
Hyper Japan for Gamers
Japan is arguably the worlds leading force when it comes to gaming. Our children are already keen gamers, like their dad, so they are very excited that Nintendo will be in attendance showcasing new games including Mario Maker 2.
Monsieur Incidental will be pleased that there will once again be a Retro Games display. Including lots of childhood memorabilia and table top gaming to enjoy with friends and family.
Hyper Japan for Manga Fans
No Japanese festival would be complete without Manga!
This year, the exhibition is teaming up with the Japanese embassy’s “MANGA JIMAN” competition where the Aichi Institute of Technology’s 3D sketchbooks will turn children’s drawings into 3D art. An amazing experience for budding artists!
Hyper Japan for COSplay Fanatics
Hyper Japan and Comic Con are both synonymous with COSplay and I cannot wait to see some real life COSplayers.
The incredibly popular COSParade and COSTest will see the finest in the country descend on Olympia.
Hyper Japan for Foodies – Eat-Japan Live Zone
This has become huge over recent years. Here you can sample the delights of Japanese cuisine, iconic dishes and street food. There is something for everyone, whether you fancy sweet or savory, or both!
For drinkers there is obviously the iconic Sake Experience as well as craft beer from MORI 1984 and cocktails on offer (I’ll give the one with octopus balls a miss, myself.)
Hyper Kawaii – for Super Cuties
I have to admit I had to ask Monsieur Incidental what Kawaii was, it turns out I knew all along I just didn’t know the name for it. There is a vast array of dress up, clothes make up and wigs along with fluffy toys to purchase – ALL OF THE FLUFFY TOYS!
Hyper Japan for Culture Vultures – The “Asakusa” Culture Zone
A chance to immerse yourself in the more traditional Japanese culture. Filled with bonsai trees and complete with a digital Koi pond here you can recharge while taking in the sights and sounds of traditional Japan.
Alongside a host of workshops including Kokeshi doll painting, origami and calligraphy you can become a master in the ancient arts of Japan. Perfect for families and creatives alike.
