This is a collaborative post with Solmar Villas
Solmar Villas recently commissioned a survey of 1000 families that found it takes over two days on holiday for families to unwind and de stress:
By far my favourite family holiday was in 2015 when Big L was 3 and Little L hadn’t even been thought of…
To put things into perspective, at that point I had been recently diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and had several operations (you can read about them here). We travelled to Cyprus in the May, just before that on 1st April, I was having the mesh removed from an incisional hernia that involved a laparotomy (incision just under my bra strap to under my belly button). The wound hadn’t quite healed when we went…
To say that we deserved that break away as a family would be an understatement.
It was lovely from start to finish. It wasn’t without its moments, as all holidays, but I have the most fond memories.
The three of us shared a villa with my mum, uncle and aunt. It was a walk to the beach and there was a pool. We hired a car and visited several villages – we like to go off the beaten track, We spent time with our family who live there. We had barbecues, swam in the pool and ate in restaurants.
My favourite thing about our holiday was being able to reconnect as a family
As I mentioned before we had had a tough couple of years with my health. At one point I was in hospital for a month, including a week in intensive care with sepsis following my bowel resection. Big L was 2 at the time and it was the hardest time for all of us I think. Monsieur Incidental was still having to work full time, my mum was looking after Big L and they were coming to visit me. I don’t know how they, or we, managed but we did.
Our lives have revolved around my hospital appointments, operations and treatment for as long as I can remember and we needed this holiday.
I vividly remember the time we spent on a deserted beach, just the three of us. It was seriously magical.
Little L made sandcastles. We played in the sea. We made up a song and dance and lifted Big L over the waves, we laughed and for the first time in what felt like forever we were free from everything. Free from the hospital appointments, the juggling childcare, the worry. I had forgotten to take a hat to the beach for Little L and it was really hot – so we improvised with a pair of shorts.
It was just an amazing day. It didn’t matter that we had forgotten to take a hat. He was happy as Larry playing with a stick on the sand with a pair of shorts on his head!
We toddled over to the restaurant over the road and Big L ate chocolate ice cream and ate chips. What’s not to love?
That holiday definitely reconnected us as a family. I feel like we need that again. I think every family deserves that magical break once in a while where you can put the stresses and strains of everyday life behind you and focus on what is truly important – your happiness.
