It was our birthday this week
Yes I said our. Monsieur Incidental and I share a birthday. It was romantic at the start of our relationship, these days we just resent each other (I jest, or do I?).
We were lucky enough to be invited to review Bar + Block in King’s Cross
So we took the opportunity to go for our birthday meal the day after our actual birthday. It is a steak house and I am a vegetarian, but Monsieur Incidental is not – steak makes him very happy. I am used to going to “meaty” restaurants, they don’t bother me so long as I have something I can eat – I’m not a fussy vegetarian.
So, off to London we toddled.
The restaurant was easy to find, about 5 minutes walk from Kings Cross St Pancras Station.
It is attached to a Premier Inn, but it is no Beefeater! Don’t get me wrong, we enjoy a Beefeater but this was less cosy family restaurant, it is much more trendy and upmarket. There were children there though and plenty of highchairs available I noticed.
The layout was very pleasing, not overcrowded. We were seated in a booth but there were also high tables for groups – it was a nice use of space.
Our first impression was of the bar area, it was quite busy – it was 6pm on a Thursday in London after all. We made our way to the reception desk and were greeted straight away and shown to our booth.
Once seated our waiter arrived with a bottle of filtered water and beef popcorn – which isn’t vegetarian by the way so I didn’t eat it.
Within a couple of minutes our waiter for the evening popped back to ask if we would like drinks. We were undecided between two bottles of wine and she offered to get us a sample of each which was a nice touch. We made our choice, the slightly cheaper Gavi.
We ordered our starters and mains
Vince opted for Atlantic Scallops to start while I had Tandoori Cauliflower Salad. Vince was very happy with his, he did mention one was a bit gritty but they were polished off quickly. What can I say about my salad? Wow! It worked really well. I would like to try and make it myself. It was luke warm and just the right amount of spicy. A great little starter and not too filling.
For our mains I had Mushroom and Spinach Gnocchi with a side of Fries Seasoned with Parmesan & Truffle Infused Oil and Vince had Tira De Ancho which is apparently a “spiral cut rib eye” (who knew?!) with chunky chips. I don’t know much about steak but it looked very nice and it was done just how Vince likes it. The only thing was he thought he should have ordered a salad rather than chips but that was his error!
My gnocchi was fabulous. It was made with an assortment of different mushrooms in a nice sauce which didn’t overpower the gnocchi, and I wouldn’t hesitate to order it again.
Finally, to dessert
Vince ordered sticky toffee pudding and I had the Chocolate Churros Sundae. Both were very nice but in all honesty unremarkable compared to the previous courses which were fabulous. They were tasty and a good size but didn’t quite have the edge that the previous courses had. Thinking back I should have gone for the cheese board – one for next time! We also had a Costa cappuccino each.
Our meal would have cost just under £100 including the drinks. All in all I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Bar + Block and would happily go back and pay. The food was of a high quality and the service impeccable.
* Our meal was free for the purposes of the review, however we paid for our own travel and all opinions are our own
