WUKA Period Pants a review

*I was gifted two pairs of WUKA pants in return for my honest review

I’m well versed in reusable sanitary protection. I have used CSP – Cloth Sanitary Protection – for several years and was intrigued by period pants so was thrilled when WUKA contacted me to try theirs.

My oldest, Big L, was in cloth nappies 6 years ago and it seemed the natural thing for me to follow suit with reusable sanitary protection. I haven’t looked back and, on the odd occasion that I’ve had to use disposable pads, I’ve hated it. I find them sweaty and itchy.

I know a lot of people use menstrual cups but they aren’t for me, personally. The times I have tried tampons I have kind of expelled them, and the thought of inserting something isn’t my cup of tea. It’s horses for courses really.

Anyway, on to WUKA period pants

My WUKA (which stands for Wake Up Kick Ass) pants arrived on the second day of my period, just in time for them to be given a baptism of fire. As they arrived in the afternoon I decided to try them overnight, I know, I like to live life on the edge.

The WUKA period pants are very soft and stretchy

My initial impression of WUKA menstrual knickers

The pants are a nice, soft, stretchy material with an absorbent pad in the gusset. The pad is a decent length and runs from quite high on the front to a decent coverage on the back. I found them a bit short in the rise for my liking. Being a full-figured woman and having had two children, one c-section and several abdominal operations, I like full coverage pants. If I can tuck my boobs in my pants I’m happy!

Undeterred I wore them to bed.

Now, I am a fan of very long CSP (Cloth Sanitary Protection), since having children and a fistula I need a lot of protection at the back, especially overnight when you roll, and may sleep on your back. WUKA period pants covered this, no problem.

As you can see the pad of the WUKA pant is nice and high at the front

WUKA period pants come in UK sizes 4 to 20

I am a size 22 and the size 20 were fine for me. They have plenty of give without feeling slack, if that makes sense. They are made from MicroModal fabric that is CO2 neutral and softer than cotton. The absorbent core is very clever, it has several layers that lock away moisture.

WUKA period pants are available for different flows

Heavy flow, medium flow, light flow and tween for young women aged 9 to 13.

I suffer from endometriosis and found the heavy flow ones worked very well even overnight. They can also be used for incontinence, I know, game changer!

Caring for your WUKA period pants

After wearing simply rinse and and wash at 40 degrees (with no conditioner as this can affect absorbency). As I use reusable sanitary protection I save all mine up until the end of my cycle, then I rinse them on a rinse cycle in the washing machine before washing with our bath towels as I don’t use fabric conditioner on them.

What did I think of WUKA period pants?

I loved them, however as I said they are too low on the front for my comfort. I have fed that back to WUKA who are considering making some higher rise pants. If they did that I would happily replace my CSP with WUKA knickers. I use WAHM (work at home mum / homemade) CSP at the moment and because I need extra long heavy pads they can be anything between £10 to £15 each so paying £20+ for WUKA pants isn’t totally out of budget. As it is I will use the WUKA I have for night times.

If WUKA do make higher rise pants this will be fabulous also for post partum and heavy periods. I found that I leaked over the sides and up the back of some CSP and these eliminate that.

**Update: April 2020 – I am still using WUKA period pants on my heaviest days overnight and have suffered no leaks whatsoever. I am really pleased with them**
