The importance of reading to children with Books2Door

The importance of reading to children is something we have always been aware of as a family

We have read to our children since day one, well maybe not day one but you know what I mean. Having read to them every night since they were babies has meant our kids are now avid readers. OK, so Little L is only 6 but he loves books and is really getting to grips with reading, originally using phonics but he is now able to read and used phonics to work out words he has not read before.

Big L, who is ten, gets through books at a rate of knots. He still likes books with pictures, comic book style like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kid Normal and, as featured in this post, the Middle School series by James Patterson. Yes, THAT James Patterson. No, there are no grizzly murders to solve.

We are in a routine of reading a book a night to our kids

As we know the importance of reading to children we take it in turns to read to Little L each night.  One night I read in English and the next Monsieur incidental and his parents read in French. Mamie & Papi video call from France and it’s a lovely way for them to be involved in reading from a distance. We started that during the first lockdown when we were unable to visit and it’s continued.

He loves his routine of bath, pyjamas then snuggle in bed with a book. Sometimes he chooses one that Big L is reading – he looks up to his big brother – other times he will choose something more suited to a younger reader. He has started to read along with us which is really lovely. He uses phonic to sound out words, any he gets stuck on we help with. Sometimes he is too tried to read with us, which is fine, he can just relax while we read to him.

Big L waits until Little L is fast asleep before climbing into his top bunk and devouring his latest read.

The boys chose a set each from their Bestsellers Collection

Big L went for the Middle School Series 11 Books Set Collection by James Patterson which is suitable for ages 9 to 14. It has a RRP of £83.87 Books2Door price £26.99! Big L had already read one of thebooks in the series so knew he would enjoy them and now has enough to at least last him the Easter holidays – and more (I hope).

Little L chose the Mr Men My Complete Collection 48 Books Set by Roger Hargreaves which is suitable for ages 5 to 7. I wasn’t sure if the Mr Men books might be a tad young for Little L but they are actually good fun and not too young at all. In fact I had a lot of them when I was little. They are the perfect length for bedtime too which is really important for reading with children
