The looong summer holiday is upon us! Here is the ultimate guide of things to do and places to go in and around Sevenoaks, Kent.

Family Fun Days by Sevenoaks District Council

There are LOADS and they are all FREEEEE! They are aimed at children under 12 (but not very young) and include everything from crafts to games and sport. No booking required – just turn up on the day but a parent or guardian must supervise.

Riverhill Himalayan Gardens Summer Holiday Magic

We love Riverhill Himalayan Gardens (our review is here) and they always make a special effort in the school holidays.

They are putting on several different activites over the Summer Holidays. From seed art to face painting and potion making. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the Yeti – we saw it recently and Little L was over the moon! Usual entrance fee applies.

Reuthe’s Nursery, Seal, Sevenoaks

Reuthe’s Nursery is next to the Crown Point on the way to Borough Green. There is a fab cafe serving fresh, local produce as well as a little play area for the kids to let off steam. 

New for this summer at Reuthe’s is an enchanting fairy trail created by local artist Tracey Johnson. Tracy is an up and coming self-taught chainsaw carver and is making a name for herself as one of the UK’s most innovative and exciting wood sculptors. Tracey has also created beautiful fairy and woodland animal sculptures made out of  wire including a rabbit and an owl which children will spot on their adventures.

Forest School on 30 July and 6, 13, 27 August
Children can explore the Lost Gardens for the day with Reuthe’s qualified Forest School Leader. Suitable for children aged 5-10, these limited availability classes are £40 per child, per day, including lunch. Each session teaches woodland essentials like campfire building, whittling and making leaf crowns and wands. Kent Country Parks, including Lullingstone, Shoreham nr Sevenoaks

Summer Activity Trails from 19th July – just turn up. It’s £3 and completed trails will win a small prize. For more information check out the Kent County Council website 

Kent Wildlife Trust – Sevenoaks Wildlife Trust, Jeffery Harrison Visitor Centre

There is lots to do at the various Kent Wildlife Trust centres across Kent this summer, including Wildlife Holiday Fun on Wednesdays at the Sevenoaks Centre.

If you don’t fancy signing up to an activity then just put your wellies on and go for a walk there. Entrance is free and it’s a lovely day out.

Coolings Green and Pleasant, Knockholt

Coolings Green and Pleasant isn’t your run of the mill garden centre. Here they have a wonderful nature trail with various animals as well as Willows Bird of Prey Centre who put on displays at various times during the day. Check here for prices 

Polhill Garden Centre, Polhill, Sevenoaks

Keeping in the garden centre theme Polhill is more than a garden centre. It also houses Maidenhead Aquatics with their HUGE koi carp tank. You can buy food to feed them – it’s awesome. It also has a free outdoor play area behind Novell’s Resturant. This is astro turf and features a climbing frame and small slide for little ones. 

Over in the Play Zone they have recently added mini golf, quads and boats. There is a £2 fee for each of these activities.

Hever Castle, Edenbridge, Kent 

KNIGHTS & PRINCESSES SCHOOL 24 JULY – 30 AUGUST

Throughout the summer holidays your little ones can experience what it was like to grow up and serve in a royal household in medieval times at Knights & Princesses School.

Suitable for children ages 7-14 (approximately), these free classes include lots of hands-on activities to keep them entertained. The classes last for around 40 minutes and take place daily at 11:30, 12:30, 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00.

Groombridge Place, Groombridge

is hosting a Wizard of Oz live spectacular. 

With three live performances every day in the new outdoor forest theatre, a visit to Groombridge Place this summer will be a magical experience for all the family.

The brilliant West End cast will entertain visitors with their wonderful singing and dancing. Little ones will feel like they have been transported to the Land of Oz as they singalong with the characters from this classic children’s novel including Dorothy, The Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and of course the Wicked Witch of the West!

There will be three 45-minute shows per day as well as cast walkabouts and the opportunity to take photos with these famous characters.

Bewl Water, Lamberhurst 

Entry is £4 per car and then you pay as little or as much as you wish. We usually make the most of the free playgrounds.

Spa Valley Railway

We spent a lovely day at Spa Valley Railway recently and had a whale of a time – check out my review with hints and tips here.

Woohoo! Or should that be Choochoo?! Or Maybe OINK! Peppa Pig will be at Spa Valley 8 and 22 August 2019.
On both days Peppa Pig will be at Groombridge Station at 10:40, 11:30, 12.30, 14:00 and 15:40.

Gather all your Pups for Paw Patrol on 15 and 29 August 2019! Marshall will be appearing on Thursday 15 August 2019 and Chase will be appearing on Thursday 29 August 2019 The heroic pups will be at Groombridge Station to see their fans arriving on trains from Tunbridge Wells West. We recently met the Pups at Showcase Cinemas in Bluewater at the preview of The Mighty Pups check out our review (and cute photos of my kids with the Paw Patrol). 

Godstone Farm, Godstone

A firm favourite for all the family (read our review from earlier this year), Godstone Farm is having a Festival on the Farm to celebrate 40 years of Godstone Farm.

Bore Place, Chiddingstone, Edenbridge

Bore Place is offering lots of different activities over the holidays. From den building, craft making and even holiday clubs check out their website for more information  

Sevenoaks Playgrounds

For a quick and free way to let off some steam there are plenty of free playgrounds in Sevenoaks, including Pontoise Close which had a refurb earlier this year.

There is also the Environmental Park behind the leisure centre, Otford, Hollybush and a little one on the Vine next to the lovely cafe.

For a free wander there is always Bradbourne Lakes, opposite the Wildlife Reserve on Bradbourne Vale Road. Take some porridge or peas to feed the ducks.

Royal Victoria Place, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

From 29th July to 26 August you’re invited to step into the wild this summer at Royal Victoria Place. Let your little ones discover some special friends from the beautiful English countryside and enjoy lots of fun all Summer long! 

Featuring a number of larger than life creatures, including our amazing giant Barn Owl puppet who will be taking flight during special interactive shows every Tuesday and Thursday. For more information check out their website Royal Victoria Place 

Bluewater, Dartford

The Beach is Back! The Beach is located at The Village car park open until Sunday 8th September. So, come on down and enjoy a day out at The Beach with us!

Entry only £3 per person, open Monday – Sunday, 12 noon – 9pm.

Come face to face with your favourite Superheroes at Bluewater! Superhero trail offers an action-packed break from shopping, inviting children to track-down 10 of their favourite superheroes.

Trail maps can be purchased from the concierge desks for £2 and everyone that completes the trail will be awarded a prize fit for a hero!

If that doesn’t float the kid’s boat Bluewater now offers a soft play with a difference in the form of Dinotropolis. We reviewed it recently, read what we thought here

Don’t forget there is also Gravilty, mini golf and much, much more!

Westerham Brewery, Biggin Hill

Each day every weekend they have a different food van – well worth a trip over to check out a working brewery, sample the local ales and take in some freshly cooked food! Check out their Facebook page for details of whats on and when each weekend.

On Saturday 17th August join Peppa Pig for Peppa Pig: My First Concert. I mean, what’s not to love? Peppa Pig AND music!

Churchill Theatre, Bromley

There are LOADS of family shows on at Churchill Theatre over the holidays. Starting with Tabby McTat 21st to 23rd July, then Milkshake Live 27th July, Shrek the Musical 8th to 10th August and In the Night Garden 20th to 24th August.

Barracudas Activity Day Camps

Their Sevenoaks site is based at Walthamstow School and ideal for children aged 4 and a half to fourteen years old.

It is rated Outstanding by Ofsted giving parents and carers peace of mind. Children have the chance to try their hands at lots of different activities while making new friends. Usual hours are 8.30 to 5.30 with the option to increase this from 8am to 6pm with their Early and Late clubs. Perfect for all parents and children!

The popular Family Mondays events return and are hosted in the historic setting of Green Court throughout the holidays at Knole.

Mon 29 July: Archaeology. Celebrate Archaeology Week by having a look at some of the artefacts found by Knole archaeology volunteers, make a fossil to take home, and design a paper mosaic.

Mon 5 August: Caterpillars and Butterflies. Fold a multi coloured paper caterpillar and design a butterfly bookmark to take home.

Mon 12 August: Trees and Plants. Stick flowers and leaves to a spiralling decoration and make a tissue paper tree to take home.

Mon 19 August: Sunshine and Rainbows. Paint a pebble with rainbow colours and make a sunshine decoration with rainbow streamers to take home.

Big Tree Climbing

Mon 29 Jul & Mon 12 Aug, 10am-5pm. 

Join highly skilled instructors to reach new heights. They will teach you how to enter a tree’s canopy using ropes and karabiners, whilst being securely attached in a harness at all times. See things from a different perspective.

Photography courses

Younger Kids: Thurs 8 Aug, 10.30-1pm

Teens: Thurs 8 Aug, 2-4.30pm 

Join Sharp Shots Photo Club to learn how a camera makes a photograph and how to control the camera settings to take great images, working with aperture, the close up setting and shutter speed. Students will finish the course with a great set of colourful, fun images.

Prices: Younger kids – £39 per person, camera rental £5 if required. Teens – £45 per person, D-SLR camera rental £10 if required.

Guided Walk: Rivers and ponds of Scotney

Join a walk visiting the rivers and ponds of Scotney. Come along to find out what we’ve done to improve our river banks and pond habitats and why. Not suitable for pushchairs and younger children due to terrain and length of walk.

Themed Thursdays

Bodiam Castle, East Sussex

Medieval Mop Fair & Castle Characters

24 Jul -1 Sept, 11am-4pm

The Mop Fair was a chance to get a job and this summer children will have the opportunity to become one of the castle characters for the day as they complete activities to see if they can gain a job in the castle (weekdays). The Castle Characters can be found throughout the castle grounds and the Castle Steward will be patrolling the courtyard everyday over the school holidays; setting missions for children and telling the castle’s history.

Have-a-go archery

Daily, 11am-4pm

See how you shape up to this important role by having a go at some archery practice on site.

Puck’s summer garden trail

This summer in celebration of the mill re-opening, our summer garden trail will be based on Kipling’s classic tale, Puck of Pook’s Hill. Set in the surroundings of the Dudwell river, we’ll recapture some of the key parts of this famous story written for Kipling’s children, Elsie and John.

Puppet making

8, 9, 27 and 28 August, 11am-4pm

Be inspired by Kipling’s animal and fairy tale characters and create your own simple puppet at a drop-in workshop. Help is on hand from expert theatre maker, Zoe Hinks of Sabotage Theatre. Suitable for 7-12 year olds

Butterfly trail

Explore the garden and woodland of Chartwell to discover all about Winston Churchill’s favourite butterflies. See how many butterflies you can spot fluttering around the flowers as you go!

F-ant-astic! Ant trail

Discover how the trees at Emmetts Garden connect to different types of ants all around the world and look out for the friendly ants dotted around the garden and woodland.

Wednesday Arts and Crafts

Shelter under the cow byre and get creative in the surroundings of the garden with nature-themed arts and crafts for little ones.
